THE MEDICAL SERVICES PROJECT
In 2008, there were 890,000 children under the age of 18 living in Arizona. 21% of those children lived in poverty and 16% lacked health insurance (Annie E. Casey Foundation 2009).
That is where we come in. The Medical Services Project (MSP) is neither an entitlement program nor an insurance plan. It is a community service project designed to provide access to primary health care to Arizona’s uninsured children from low-income families. With funding from the Arizona Department of Health Services, the Medical Services Project has created a system of linkages between participating physicians, who donate appointment slots for uninsured children from low-income families, and referring public-health and school nurses. Children served through MSP do not qualify for KidsCare or AHCCCS. However, they can participate in the program if their AHCCCS or KidsCare application is pending.
The Medical Services Project is administered by the American Academy of Pediatrics - Arizona Foundation - a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Over the past 16 years, it has provided more than 14,000 health related services for 6,500 children. These services include primary care and specialty referrals, prescription medication, diagnostic laboratory services and eyeglasses.
